What is a Malocclusion?

Malocclusion, is a condition in which the teeth and jaws are misaligned.

Misalignment can occur in the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both. Misaligned teeth can lead to an uneven bite that affects chewing and speaking abilities.

Misaligned teeth can also cause overcrowding of the teeth, making it difficult to properly clean and maintain good oral hygiene.

How Misaligned Teeth Can Affect Your Oral Health

Misaligned teeth can lead to a range of oral health issues, including plaque buildup, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Misaligned teeth make it difficult for you to properly clean your teeth because food particles and bacteria get trapped in the spaces created between crooked teeth.

As a result, there is an increased risk of plaque buildup which can eventually lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

Misaligned teeth can also cause changes in your bite which can lead to jaw issues such as temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

How To Keep Misaligned Teeth Clean

Taking extra care of your teeth is essential if they are not perfectly straight.

Spend some extra time to ensure you reach every tooth while brushing, remember to brush the inside surfaces, outside surfaces and the chewing surfaces of your teeth including the gumline.

And, make sure flossing becomes part of a regular routine. Consider using interdental brushes to remove food debris from those hard-to-reach areas, this will help to prevent plaque build up.

You should brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste and spit out any excess toothpaste. But, contrary to popular belief you should not rinse your mouth out after brushing. The concentrated fluoride in remaining toothpaste helps protect teeth from decay and can be diminished if rinsed away.

Teeth Grinding Caused By Misalignment

Bruxism, otherwise known as teeth grinding, is a common issue that may be caused by an uneven bite. Unfortunately if left untreated it can lead to serious damage of the enamel on your teeth.

TMD and Misaligned Teeth

Improperly aligned teeth can put strain on your temporomandibular joint, causing discomfort and tightness throughout the jaw area. This mismatch in your bite mechanics increases the risk of TMJ disorder (TMD).
