LINGUAL BRACES

Lingual braces are a relatively new, modern and invisible alternative to conventional braces. They are fixed to the back of your teeth, making them the only truly invisible brace. Speech can be a little affected while your soft tissues adapt but, we use very low profile brackets to minimise discomfort. Typically your tongue adapts within 3days and 99% of our lingual patients would agree that really is the worth it for the ultimate option in discreet orthodontics.

Lingual braces consist of custom-made brackets and wires that are fixed on the inside (lingual) surface of the teeth. They work in a very similar way to traditional braces but are far more discreet as they are concealed from view.

Additional specialist training is required for orthodontists to be able to work with lingual braces. We are lucky enough to have clinicians who work with this advanced technology. Dr Anthony Lam is a leading practitioner in the UK treating over 100 cases a year and lecturing about the techniques involved. Paired with suresmile, lingual braces really are one of the most advanced brace systems on offer.

They are particularly suitable for adults and older teenagers who may feel self-conscious about wearing more obvious braces.

Treatment steps

Impressions are taken of your teeth.
Custom-made brackets are produced in a laboratory and, when ready, they are cemented to the inside surface of the teeth.
Wires are attached to these brackets.
A gentle, continuous force is applied to your teeth for 12-24 months depending on the severity of your case.

As with any orthodontic appliance, you will need to maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine to avoid plaque build-up and potential damage to the teeth. As well as regular brushing and flossing, an interdental brush may help you clean those hard to reach places, especially around the brackets.

After treatment you should wear a retainer to keep your newly straightened teeth in line and stop them moving back to their former position.
